CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
District #87 provides its students with a comprehensive, well-structured program in all subject areas with specialists teaching art, computer education, speech/drama, music, physical education and health. Daily instruction in physical education at all grade levels is standard with intramural and interscholastic sports offered for upper elementary and middle school students.
The district provides a full range of special education programs including developmental and early childhood learning in cooperation with the Proviso Area for Exceptional Children agency.
Middle schools offer a unique music lab experience for general music students with full music labs of 32 digital pianos. All schools have full computer labs with new Macintosh computers, and the district conducts a comprehensive computer education curriuclum for grades K-8. All schools have excellent library/media centers with large, updated collections complemented by a K-8 library/media curriculum. The district also offers an outdoor education program fully integrated with the district's science curriuclum.
The district provides strong early childhood programs featuring PreKindergarten screening and related services, PreKindergarten and full-day Kindergarten. The district also conducts special programs such as Reading Improvement, Title I Reading, After-School Remedial Reading, Gifted Learning, Bilingual Education, and English as a Second Language to meet the needs of special student populations.
Hallmarks of the district curriculum are the individualized, technology-managed reading and math programs—Reading Renaissance and Math Renaissance.
District staff regularly review all curricular programs to ensure quality and relevance in all programs.
