Whittier Students Show Artistic Talents
On December 2, 2009, the Whittier students and staff conducted an Art exhibit, where the students’ best work of the year was displayed in the school’s gym. The event was well attended by students, staff, parents, and other members of the community. Over 300 people attended the event. In order to connect with the theme of an art show, the Whittier staff served cheese, crackers, grapes, and juice for those that attended.
The artwork on display represented the students’ diverse interests and talents. Ms. Julia Mack, Whittier School Art Teacher, had been preparing her students for the event since October of this school year. Ms. Mack provided opportunities for her students to embed elements of art and the principles of design in their work. Consistent with the District’s curriculum, the students studied a variety of artists and reflected the style of the artists in their art projects. In addition, the students created an Artist Statement, which explained the creative process entailed with their project and how the artist they studied inspired them to create their work of art. We thank Ms. Mack in providing all kindergarten through fifth grade students opportunities to express their creativity and see the world through the eyes of a legendary artist.
