In honor of Earth Day, the Whittier staff accepted donations of crayons to be shipped

to an environmental program called SCARCE (School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Compositing Education).  The goal of the project was to recycle crayons and remold them back into larger crayons with a much wider grip.  The project made good use of broken and unused crayons while benefiting students with special needs.  We thank the Whittier staff and community for their donations.  The crayons were shipped to SCARCE on Earth Day.

The staff wore green on this day to promote “green practices.” In addition, each classroom

teacher turned off the lights in their classroom for 2 hours to honor this event and conserve

energy.

On April 27th Whittier School celebrated Career Day.  This year’s event promoted career

awareness in the areas of aviation, recreation, carpentry, public service (police and fire

department), politics, and the medical field. Whittier students were engaged in learning

about the professions mentioned above.  We thank this year’s speakers, many of whom

represented the workforce within the community.

On May 5, 2010, Whittier School hosted Pre Kindergarten Pajama Night for Riley and Whittier Pre-kindergarten families.  Nelsen Gill, a Carribean performer, entertained the pre-kindergarten students and their families through singing multi-cultural songs.  Students and families celebrated the event by singing along with Nelson and dancing to the music.

Teacher Appreciation Day was celebrated on May 4, 2009.  We thank our teachers for their

dedication and  hard work all year.  The PTA hosted a teacher luncheon on this day to honor our teachers.
