CLASSROOM HOMEWORK POLICY

GRADING /HOMEWORK POLICY
NORTHLAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL
MR. LACOGNATA
SOCIAL STUDIES

With the goal of helping your child to succeed in school, I have established the following homework and grading policies in my classroom to promote learning.    Northlake Middle School has adopted 5 goals for the student to attain:

Be Prompt  -- be in the classroom before the bell
Be Prepared – have all necessary supplies for class
Pay Attention – listen while others are speaking, be on task
Be Positive – encourage others and be courteous
Persevere – try your best --- no student will fail if they try

REASONS FOR HOMEWORK:
1) It reinforces skills and material learned in class.
2) It prepares students for the next day’s lesson.
3) It teaches students to work independently.
4) It teaches students organizational and time-management skills.
5) It aids in evaluating student progress.

ASSIGNMENT NOTEBOOKS:
All students are issued an assignment notebook at the beginning of the year.  This book should be used to record the homework in all subjects and checked by parents nightly to show just what the child had for homework.

GUIDELINES FOR COMPLETING HOMEWORK
IT IS IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS FOR EACH  INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
      Generally:
1) assignments are done in INK as pencil smudges easily , making papers illegible
2) assignments are done on looseleaf paper (notebooks are for NOTES only)
3) CORRECT headings should be on all papers (see top of page)
4) QUESTIONS and  ANSWERS  should be written out NEATLY
5) homework can be typed or done on the computer at any time.

FREQUENCY OF HOMEWORK
Written homework is generally given 2 or 3 times per week.  However, I have informed the students that I expect 15 to 20 minutes of serious study everyday, even when written homework is not assigned.  This may consist of reading, taking notes, reviewing vocabulary or reviewing questions about the material.

CONSEQUENCES FOR NOT COMPLETING HOMEWORK
Conference with student.  Student may be required to have assignment notebook signed each night.

PROCEDURES FOR MAKE-UP WORK
Absent students may always make up work according to the District policy.  The student is responsible for getting and turning in missed assignments.

Unexcused late work is always accepted for credit as I believe that effort and good habits are extremely important,

QUIZZES:

Students may use any notes written in their spiral notebooks during quizzes.

TESTS:
Students will be given at least a week’s notice before a test.

GRADE AVERAGING:
All assignments are graded on a percentage basis.  The weights of the categories will be:  homework 10%, quizzes 25%, tests 25%, participation/preparation 40%.  The letter grade is based on the official District grading scale.

REPORTS TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS:
I send home a computer printout that shows a student’s grades to that point in time, at parent request.

PARENTAL/GUARDIAN ASSISTANCE NEEDED:
To help your student succeed, I need your help.  I ask that you do the following:

1) Establish homework as a top priority for your child
2) Provide a quiet place for your child to work
3) Do not allow your child to get out of doing homework
4) Provide positive support when homework is completed
5) Contact me if your child is having problems with homework

EXTRA ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS:
I am available before  and after school for students that WANT extra help (with 24 hour notice)  Parents/guardians can call 708-449-3195 ext. 3787 to leave a message on my voice mail.  You can e-mail me through a link on the district website at:    http://www.berkeley87.org
