CLASSROOM HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework is both an essential opportunity for you to get involved in your child’s educational experience and for your child to continue practicing what we are learning in the classroom. A Math practice page is given almost every day. Homework can be found in your child’s take-home folder and should also be returned to school in their take-home folder the next day.

There is a variety of Language Arts homework that will be sent home weekly, too.  Every Monday, you will find a Decodable Reader in your child's folder.  After reading it with your child, please sign it to verify that you have worked with him or her on the concepts about print, high-frequency words, blending of sounds, and phonics skills.  Once in a while, you will find flashcards of our high-frequency words.  Please help your child cut them out and use them at home to practice recognizing them quickly.

Also, to reinforce the sound of the specific letter of the week, you will find a paper (see photo above) to draw and/or cut pictures from magazines/newspapers of words that begin with that letter.  These "Letter of the Week" pages go into our Class Alphabet Books that are enjoyed by all of the kindergartners in the Word Work/ABC's Center!  Once again, please do not forget to return your child's reading homework to school in his or her take-home folder by the end of the week.

Please read with your child nightly! At least 5-10 minutes a day of reading is recommended. Bedtime stories are a great time for this!

In addition, extra review may also be assigned for skills that your child is having difficulties with.

Students are expected to finish their work in school every day. In the case that work is not completed, it will be sent home to finish and return the next day. If your child is bringing home incomplete work frequently, that may be a sign that he or she has behaviors that may need to be worked on.

 CLASSROOM RULES

In our classroom, we try our best to follow the District 87 Rules everyday.

1. Follow directions when given.
2. Stay on task; work quietly.
3. Keep hands, feet, and objects away from others.
4. Come prepared for class.
5. Respect yourself, others, and everyone's property.

Unfortunately, if students misbehave, there will be consequences. There is a color system implemented in our classroom. In the morning, every student begins in the GREEN zone. If a student is not obeying the classroom rules, on the first occurrence, he or she will be given a warning. On the second warning, he or she will be asked to move their name (frog) into the YELLOW zone, which means “caution” and reminds the student to follow the rules. A ticket is taken away. If the misbehavior continues, the student will have to move their name (frog) into the RED zone. Then, he or she is asked to “stop and think” about his or her misbehavior. A five-minute time-out (or a loss of five minutes of recess) will be implemented.

In their take-home folders, students will keep a weekly behavior chart. It indicates whether your child was in the green, yellow, or red zone at the end of each day. When behavior problems occur, parents will also be informed with specific reasons for why the student changed colors.  Serious behavior will be sent to the office immediately.

In order for our classroom to be an environment, in which both learning and fun take place, the students are rewarded for good behavior. When a child exhibits positive behavior, they receive a ticket. At the end of every week, the students have the chance to trade in their earned tickets for prizes, like books, pencils, educational games, or stickers, in the class treasure chest. They may even save up their tickets to trade in for special privileges, such as eating lunch with the teacher.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

* Red take-home folders should be brought home every afternoon and returned to school every morning with your child. As the child’s teacher and parents, it is a very important way for us to communicate. Any notes that I will send home to you will be in the take-home folders. In addition, any homework and/or incomplete school work will be placed in there. You may also send me notes by putting them in your child’s take-home folder. Emptying their take-home folders will be a part of our morning routine. Please be sure to check and empty their take-home folders every night. Thank you for your cooperation.

* Brr! Winter is officially here!  Please make sure your child is coming to school with a jacket, gloves/mittens, hat, scarf, etc.  If you are in need of these items, please let me know.  Also, if your child is wearing snow boots to school, please remember that he/she must change into uniform shoes when inside the building.
