Teacher’s Name: Ms. Dubson Grade: First Room #: 107 Homework Expectations According to our District 87 curriculum handbook, homework is defined as: An academic assignment or learning activity that relates to the school curriculum and is to be completed outside of class. Homework assignments review, reinforce, or extend classroom learning providing practice and application of knowledge gained; homework assignments teach students responsibility and organizational skills; homework assignments promote wise and orderly use of time; and homework assignments provide opportunities for enrichment activities. Homework is an integral aspect of school because it provides your student with an additional opportunity to interact with newly learned concepts or prepare for an upcoming lesson. Each night, your child is expected to complete ten minutes of homework that does not include reading or math practice. In addition to the ten minutes of homework, your child is expected to read for twenty minutes with an adult. During the twenty minutes of reading, your child may read his or her decodable reader, weekly shared reading selection, guided reading selection, a library book, or a book from home. Also in addition to the nightly ten minutes of homework, your son or daughter must practice his or her math facts with an adult. Generally, homework will be assigned every night, Monday thru Friday. However, there may be times when the students will not have homework, but they will have it more times than not. I strongly believe that homework is a valuable tool in helping students make the most of their school experience. The homework I assign will reinforce what the students have learned in class. All homework will be checked and returned as soon as possible. It is important that ALL missing assignments are made up. Completion of homework is included on your child’s report card. Listed below is an idea of what to expect your child to bring home on a regular basis: MATH: a practice worksheet that accompanies the lesson taught that day READING: Please make sure that your child is reading at least 20 minutes each SPELLING: Monday-Your child will bring home a list of the current week’s spelling words. Please read and spell each word with your child. Tuesday-Your child will bring home a double-sided workbook page. Please help your child complete the front and back. This is due on Wednesday. Wednesday-Your child will bring home a different double-sided workbook page. Please help your child complete both sides. This is due on Thursday. Thursday-Please give your child a “practice” spelling test at home to help prepare for Friday’s spelling test. If your child misspells any of the words, make sure he/she studies those words and learns how to spell them correctly. Friday-SPELLING TEST in class!! Making homework a top priority will reinforce to your child the importance of their education. Please help your child if additional instruction is needed, but do not complete the assignment for your child. Be supportive and offer verbal praise.
1. You are aware of your child’s homework assignments each night. 2. You have read with your child for at least 20 minutes per night.
Make-Up Assignments and Absences If your child does not attend school, please contact me at 708-449-3424, and I will prepare make-up work for your child to complete at home. The make-up work can then be picked up in the office between 3-3:30pm. It is your child’s responsibility to complete the missed assignments.
Tests and Quizzes If your child should earn below a 70% on a test or quiz, it will be sent home for a parent signature. Please review the test or quiz with your son or daughter and return to school the next day.
If you ever have any questions regarding any of the above information, please feel free to call me: (708)449-3424. This is my personal telephone mailbox, so just leave me a message, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Thank you, Ms. Dubson |
