CLASSROOM HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework Expectations

According to the District 87 curriculum handbook, homework is defined as:

An academic assignment or learning activity that relates to the school curriculum and is to be completed outside of class.  Homework assignments review, reinforce, or extend classroom learning providing practice and application of knowledge gained; homework assignments provide opportunities for enrichment activities.

Homework is an integral aspect of school because it provides your student with an additional opportunity to interact with newly learned concepts or prepare for an upcoming lesson.  Each night, your child is expected to complete ten minutes of homework that does not include reading or math practice.  In addition to the ten minutes of homework, your child is expected to read for twenty minutes with an adult.  During the twenty minutes of reading, your child may read his or her decodable reader, guided reading selection, library book or book from home.  Also in addition to the nightly ten minutes of homework, your son or daughter must practice his or her math facts with an adult.

Generally, homework will be assigned every night, Monday thru Friday.  However, there may be times when the students will not have homework, but they will have it more times than not.  I strongly believe that homework is a valuable tool in helping students make the most of their school experience.  The homework I assign will reinforce what the students have learned in class.  All homework will be checked and returned as soon as possible.  It is important that ALL missing assignments are made up.  Completion of homework is included on your child's report card.

Listed below is an idea of what to expect your child to bring home on a regular basis:

Spelling B There will be Spelling and Vocabulary words sent home every Monday. These words will go along with the Reading Theme of the week. You should practice these words with your child every night. On Tuesday's I will send home the first front-to-back spelling homework sheet. On Wednesday's it will be the second front-to-back sheet.  Thursday's are for review for the spelling test. Vocabulary words should be practiced every night. It may be easier to study the words in smaller groups. We will have our Spelling and Vocabulary tests on Friday's.
Math homework will be sent home every night. This will be between 1 and 2 front to back pages. This will always accompany what we have done in class to use as an example. Starting in the first week of October, we will begin our weekly addition fact quizzes. The goal of these quizzes are to help students to memorize their math facts. They will have 5 minutes to correctly complete a 35-problem quiz. We will start with 0's and go as high as 12. We will then move onto subtraction, this will be in January. Students will be able to monitor their progress with a sticker chart in class. They will continue to retake the same quiz if they do not pass the first time and continue until they have success. Be sure to give your child praise for a job well done when they have completed a quiz.
Reading is an extremely important component of First Grade. Therefore, students are expected to read at home either on their own or with a parent for 20 minutes every night. Parents are responsible for filling out a nightly reading log with their child for what was read. Students will able to read stories from our curriculum books, school library books, stories from their at home libraries, or any other resources that are available. Any classroom or school library books that go home are expected to come back to school every day, they are considered part of the nightly homework. Classroom incentives, such as stickers prizes, will be in place to reward the weekly completion of these reading logs. The time that is spent reading with your child will build their self-confidence in reading, sight word knowledge, fluency, and love of reading.

**Your child will have a "Weekly Homework Assignment Sheet" in his/her take home folder every Monday.  This sheet is to stay in your child's folder for the entire week.  Homework for each day will be noted.  A parent/guardian's signature is also required EACH day on this sheet.  Your signature will indicate:

       1. You are aware of your child's homework assignments each night.

      2. You have read with your child for at least 20 minutes per night.

I will remove this sheet first thing every Monday morning and replace it with a new one for the week.

Make-Up Assignments and Absences

If your child does not attend school, please contact me at 708-449-3415, and I will prepare make-up work for your child to complete at home.  The make-up work can then be picked up in the office between 3-3:30pm. It is your child's responsibility to complete the missed assignments.

Tests and Quizzes

If your child should earn below a 70% on a test or quiz, it will be sent home for a parent signature.  Please review the test or quiz with your son or daughter and return to the school the next day.

If you ever have any questions regarding any of the above information, please feel free to call me at 708-449-3415.  This is my personal telephone mailbox, so just leave me a message, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank You,

Mrs. Hayes
