I am happy to be back at Riley School and look forward to working with the students again! We will be having a wonderful music performance involving all the students the first week of May!

MUSIC OBJECTIVES, WEEK OF FEBRUARY 6th, 2012

*Every class begins with the "Hello" song and ends with the "Goodbye" song that are in the Blue Lesson Plan binder. * 2nd--5th grade  students will also work on the song, "Follow the Drinkin' Gourd", for February- African-American History month. They will also be working on "The Star-Spangled Banner."

KINDERGARTEN
Sing in rhythm, maintain a steady tempo, respond to music with purposeful movement. Move to music with changing tempos. Show steady beat by playing rhythm instruments.

FIRST GRADE
Students will sing with expression and perform sounds and movements to show the steady beat. Students will play the steady beat of a song. Sing and respond to melodic direction. Respond through movement. Identify melodic direction as upward or downward.

SECOND GRADE
Sing and move to show the steady beat, and maintain a steady tempo. Echo words and practice actions in a song. Perform the steady beat on classroom instruments. Differentiate between rhythm and the steady beat.

THIRD GRADE
Learn about the placement of notes on lines and in spaces of the staff. Learn the history of the recorder. Sing and play rhythm instruments to show the steady beat. Learn the different notes in the tree of note values. Identify different tempos in a song. Identify genres in music.

FOURTH GRADE
Sing and play rhythm instruments to show the steady beat. Identify different tempos in a song. Show rhythm through movement. Identify different genres of music, and how the language used for the lyrics might differ from standard English. Identify time signature and meter in a song.

FIFTH GRADE
Students will learn about the diversity of music in the United States. Identify different genres of songs. Follow a flow chart for a piece of music and identify theme and variation. Sing and play rhythm instruments to show the steady beat. Identify rhythm combinations that use quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests.

4. Stay in your seat (unless we're doing dance/ movement activities!)

5. Keep your hands, feet, and other objects to yourself

MUSIC GRADES:

For Grades 1 & 2, students are given a daily grade based upon participation, following directions, and staying on task. These grades translate into a Performance Rating of 1, 2, 3, or 4, as specified on the report card in four areas; understands musical concepts, demonstrates good listening skills, participates and makes sincere effort, and makes good use of class time.

For 3rd through 5th grade, each student walks into the music classroom with an "A", or 100 points (100%) It is up to the student to keep their points in music class by participating, following instructions, staying on task (completing assignments/ tasks), and having a good attitude. Students are given a music grade each time they come to music class. The following is how the music grade is determined each class period;

Participates in class; 50 points, or 50%

Completes assignments (tasks); 40 points, or 40%

Understands fundamentals; 10 points, or 10%
