CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PLAN

CLICK TO VIEW BERKELEY 87 HOMEWORK PROGRAM

It is with pleasure that I welcome your child to my class.  I can look forward to a very exciting and rewarding school year.  In order to provide your student with the excellent educational climate he/she deserves, I have developed the following Classroom Management System that will be in effect for the remainder of the year.

District 87 Rules:

  1. Follow all directions.
  2. Stay on task; work quietly.
  3. Keep hands, feet, and objects away from others.
  4. Come prepared for class.
  5. Respect yourself, others, and everyone’s property.

Classroom Management System

I have discussed this in our classroom so your child should be aware of the rewards and consequences.  Each day students start on blue.  If a student chooses not to follow any of these rules, he/she will receive a verbal warning, then a color change as a consequence.

Color Change System:

    Blue – Great day!

    Orange – Warning

Green – lose 5 minutes of recess time

Yellow – no recess and a Reflection Note

Red – Conduct Report and a phone call home

Reflection Note: A Reflection Note is filled out by the student during recess.  It will state what actions they chose, and what they will change so it will not happen again.  This reflection note will be attached to your student’s Daily Homework Sheet and will require a parent’s signature.

Severe Disruption:  Immediately sent to the office

Students will receive verbal praise and other incentives for good behavior.

While I have discussed this Classroom Management System in class with your child, I would appreciate it if you would review it with him/her at home.

Homework Expectations

According to our District 87 curriculum handbook, homework is defined as:

An academic assignment or learning activity that relates to the school curriculum and is to be completed outside of class.  Homework assignments review, reinforce, or extend classroom learning providing practice and application of knowledge gained; homework assignments teach students responsibility and organizational skills; homework assignments promote wise and orderly use of time; and homework assignments provide opportunities for enrichment activities.

Homework is an integral aspect of school because it provides your student with an additional opportunity to interact with newly learned concepts or prepare for an upcoming lesson.

Aligning with District 87’s policies on homework, I feel that homework is an extension of the learning that occurs in the classroom.  I will assign homework daily.  Homework should take students 20 minutes to complete, not including reading each evening and studying for tests.  Spelling and Reading tests will be given every Friday, unless otherwise stated. Each week a new Spelling packet will be given out on Monday and will be due on Friday, unless otherwise stated.  Students will be assigned one page each day to complete for homework.

I expect students to do their best on homework.  I expect homework to be neat, not sloppy.  I expect students to do the work on their own and only ask for help after they have given it their best effort.  If possible, I would appreciate it if a parent would spend a few minutes each evening reviewing completed homework assignments.

I strongly believe in the value positive support plays in motivating children to develop good study habits.  I will give students praise and other incentives when they do their homework.  However, if a student does not complete their homework, which includes your signature on their Daily Homework Sheet and Daily Homework Reading Log, they will receive a color change. Any unfinished class work and homework will be finished during recess.  Please make sure that any Library books or textbooks brought home are returned to school the next day, so students can use them in school.

I know that at times, there is a legitimate reason a student is not able to finish their homework.  Please send a short note to me explaining why the homework was not completed and when I can expect it to be done.  Also, feel free to contact me at anytime to discuss questions you may have about homework.

Friday Folders

All student work, excluding tests, will be sent home on the last day of the school week.  In most cases the last day of the school week will be Friday.  Please find time over the weekend to look at your child’s work and discuss it with your child.  Keep all student work at home.  It does not need to be returned to school.  Sign the Friday folder sheet and return that sheet and folder to school with child.  Please check their Daily Homework Sheet for any changes to this procedure.

Tests and Quizzes

If your child should earn a D or F on a test or quiz, it will be sent home for a parent’s signature and circled on their Daily Homework Sheet.  Please review the test or quiz with your child and return it to school the next day.
