Standards Based Grading

A Message from the Superintendent

Dear District 87 Parents/Guardians, 

Berkeley School District 87 is continuously seeking opportunities to improve the education we provide to our students and community. Your partnership in this process is critical to our success. This is especially true as we seek ways to effectively measure and communicate how our students are learning and growing.

The Illinois Learning Standards establish expectations for what all students should know and be able to do in each subject at each grade. They serve as guides to establish high expectations in order to prepare students for college and careers. Our District 87 curriculum embeds these learning standards as the foundation for the learning targets for each grade level and subject area.

In order to more clearly communicate your child’s progress toward mastery of these learning standards, our District 87 team has created a new report card based on the specific learning standards.  While our current report card follows a more traditional model of grading, it fails to truly capture student mastery of specific learning targets. A standards-based report card provides a tool to accurately communicate the progress your child is making on mastering the district identified learning targets for each grade level and subject area from kindergarten through eighth grade. 

We will begin using a standards-based report card for English/Language Arts (ELA) during the 2019-2020 school year for grades K-5, and will expand this to the middle school during the 2020-2021 school year. While we understand a transition to a new report card will take time to fully implement, it is our hope that these changes will provide clearer and more meaningful information about your child’s education in District 87.
