Nourishing Students. Elevating Experiences.
The Nutrition Services Department at Berkeley School District 87 is dedicated to providing every student with access to nutritious, appealing meals that fuel learning, support wellness, and strengthen community. Through our participation in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), all enrolled students receive both breakfast and lunch at no cost each school day. This ensures equitable access to healthy meals while eliminating financial barriers for families.
Our menus are designed to meet or exceed the nutrition standards established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and reflect a balance of whole grain-rich foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and low-fat or fat-free milk options. Competitive food offerings comply with USDA Smart Snacks in School standards to promote consistent healthy choices throughout the school day.
Engaging Students Through Hands-On Experiences
We believe that nutrition education and positive food experiences go hand in hand. Students participate in creative, hands-on culinary opportunities such as taste tests, build-your-own menu stations, themed cultural celebrations highlighting diverse cuisines, and seasonal promotion events. These initiatives encourage healthy choices, expand food literacy, and make school meals an engaging part of the school day.
Supporting School Culture
Nutrition Services partners with school leadership to strengthen the overall school environment by providing breakfast and snack service for institute days, new staff orientations, and appreciation events. Through hospitality, professionalism, and attention to detail, we contribute to a welcoming and positive school climate.
Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement
Our department prioritizes continuous improvement and innovation. Staff participate in professional development workshops and industry conferences to remain current on best practices in school nutrition. These efforts support enhanced meal quality, improved efficiency, and elevated dining experiences for students.
We maintain thorough documentation of program compliance, including Smart Snacks standards, portion verification, and operational oversight, ensuring accountability and transparency in all aspects of the program.
Commitment to Community and Wellness
Nutrition Services works collaboratively with families and community partners to promote healthy habits beyond the cafeteria. Menu information, program updates, and wellness initiatives are shared through district communications and the website to ensure accessibility and transparency.
The District also supports summer meal programs to provide continued access to nutritious meals when school is not in session.
